Do I need an Environmental Permit?
If you produce biodiesel in commercial quantities (over 5000 litres per year) you will require a permit from the Environment Agency. The permit must be in place before you begin production.
If you operate a small installation you may qualify for a "low impact" permit. Low impact permits have significantly reduced fees and the application process is more straightforward. The qualification criteria for a low impact permit must be considered and the details can be found on the Environment Agency web site. Generally to qualify for a low impact permit, the operation must give rise to low levels of waste and emissions and be able to run satisfactorily with low managerial input.
Larger operations will require a full Environmental Permit. A small site can upgrade from low impact as production increases.
